Johnson outboard electronic ignition conversion kit

This article is not meant to be the bible for these conversions, but to give you some guidelines, if some readers can add or find fault to what I have put together please let me know. This would involve replacing the right flywheel with starter ring gear to match your ignition system or at least be compatiblebypass cover that acts as the starter motor mounting bracket, wiring from the battery to the push button switch then on to the starter.

Technical Details

It just will NOT recharge the battery. A fully charged battery may last a week of normal electric starts however. The electric start does come in handy to start the motor for us older geezers who may have physical problems or if in a somewhat emergency situation, or if you are using the motor from a front console or steering station. Try to find a flywheel off a model near to your year, however I have just received correspondence where a guy did just that with a 81 who used a 90 flywheel so it worked for him.

If you are newer than ou can not go backwards on flywheels into the series unless those are the years you have as those used magneto ignition. Sorry I can not help with flywheel part numbers as I do not have access to that data, being a shade tree mechanic. Doing it this way the battery will not be charged by the motor, however these motor's alternator is so weak that UNLESS you run it at high RPM it will not maintain the battery anyway. Also this way you do not need any of the other electronics under the flywheel or wiring to the rectifier or even the neutral safety switch.

These electric start motors do not use a starter solenoid but a Heavy Duty button inline AND direct to the starter. It can be done, but may not be cost effective if you price new parts which may not now be available depending on the year of your motor.

The simplest would be to buy a complete used set of parts, or another motor that has a blown powerhead or lower unit.

As you can see from the information on the regular article that the ignition and therefore also the charge units are vastly different. Starters and the by-pass cover are the same from up to The under the flywheel parts differ and are matched into families of the motors "improvements" over the years. W hen it comes to flywheels, new ones are expensive if even available now-days and trying to find the right used one may take some time. There are differences in the electric start flywheel over the rope start type.

At the time they were in production, the factory had no idea what improvements were to come along during this series of motor lifespan, so in looking back, we can now categorize them into types. Again these are NOT factory designation numbers.

This flywheel will have cast into it words like "points need to be set at. However without inspection holes in the flywheel, it is impossible to locate the crankshaft rotation to set these points at the marks unless they are using a special plate. This has a charge coil under the flywheel that sends a small voltage to the power pack, which ups the voltage to volts, which is then sent to individual external coils and on to the spark plugs.Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit.

The Hot-Spark electronic ignition conversion kit replaces breaker points and condenser in the distributor to provide rock-solid reliability. With the Hot-Spark electronic ignition, dwell and timing are always spot-on accurate. No matter how strong your engine is, you won't get the most out of it without a good spark. The stock, points-based ignition system used technology that dates back a century - to the Kettering system, which was introduced in the Cadillac.

Even though you can adjust breaker points for near-electronic ignition performance, they will burn and wear within a few thousand miles, long before the recommended replacement interval. With points, the timing will drift; power and fuel economy will suffer. The Hot-Spark electronic ignition conversion kit delivers a strong spark every time and is maintenance-free. You'll notice quicker starts, more top end power and a little gas mileage boost. It's as easy to install as points and condenser! Advantages of the Hot-Spark electronic ignition conversion kit:.

Replaces points and condenser with solid-state electronics Set it and forget it - Never adjust points and timing again! Zero maintenance Delivers far more voltage to the spark plugs than points-based points Reliable Hall-effect technology Never gets out of adjustment Rock-steady reliability Dwell and timing are always spot-on accurate Increased gas mileage, fuel economy Quick starting Smooth idling Cleaner emissions Longer spark plug life Longer engine life Cleaner engine oil due to less unburned fuel Longer interval between oil changes Easy to install - If you can install points, you can install the Hot-Spark electronic ignition conversion No points to wear, burn, pit or corrode No condenser needed Absolutely no points float - zero - even at redline RPM and beyond!

Never worry about drifting dwell or timing again No rubbing parts - nothing to wear out!

Fits completely under the distributor cap Stealth modification - maintains stock appearance Includes everything you need, no external ignition box required. Works with stock distributor and coil Encased in high-temp thermoplastic - protected from the elements and oil, grease, dirt, water, etc.

Never bother with points or condenser again! Requires a volt, negative ground electrical system. Too much voltage can damage the ignition module and other electronic components.

Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. We need your distributor's brand name, distributor part number and number of engine cylinders to ensure that the electronic ignition conversion kit is correct one for your particular distributor.

If your distributor part number, normally found on the side of the distributor body, is not among those listed on the relevant web page, chances are, the HotSpark ignition conversion kit won't fit your distributor. It's imperative that we know your distributor's brand name, distributor part number and the number of cylinders of your engine.

You may need to remove the distributor temporarily, so that you can read the distributor part number from the side of the distributor body.

Usually, the side of your distributor will be covered with oil and dirt, so you'll need to clean it to find the distributor brand name and exact part number. We can guarantee only that each of our ignition kits will fit a distributor with one of the distributor part numbers listed on its relevant web page. Otherwise, it likely won't fit. HotSpark ignition kits require a volt, negative ground earth electrical system.

If you order the wrong electronic ignition conversion kit for your distributor, you'll need to return it to us, via US Postal Service mail within 45 days from date of purchase.

All rights reserved.Magneto ignition was used on all the OMC motors up until about However some of the later smaller single cylinder motors 4hp may still have magneto ignition for a number of years later. The earlier models will have coils mounted under the flywheel while some later motors use external coils.

All else being OK, it was taken for granted that if you have spark, the motor will run fine, and that is correct But, for those who are new to the older engines having a magneto ignition, points are a different animal altogether, and even though you can get spark, and they may engine run, it may not be optimum unless the points are careful set and checked against the timing marks on the timing plate.

Failure to do so can result in poor engine performance, a huge difference in smooth trolling idle and top end power with possible detonation under high loads, plus poor fuel economy. OK, you may luck out on the first try, but even a blind squirrel finds an acorn at times.

Therefore, it is critical to get points perfectly set on the mark. On twins, it is even more critical because it affects the balance of the power impulses which are traveling through all the moving parts, and can cause at a minimum, poor performance, moderate vibration, and if really out of synch, it can wear out and break things eventually.

So, spend the extra time up front, and be rewarded with many hours of trouble free operation. Points rarely fail, the weakest link is the newer condensers Asian mfg which are inferior to ones made before about USA mfg. Coils on these series are almost indestructible, and in that many experienced users have never been stranded by the magneto driven motors due to an ignition problem.

Many older knowledgeable boaters prefer the points system on a backup motor, especially when you're 15 miles plus offshore. This fitted in place of the flywheel and protruded out to the diameter to clear the timing plate, it had a downward pointer on the outer 2 ends that allowed you to adjust the points at the same time you could fine tune them to time the firing. Now, I am assuming that you have some idea of how a outboard motor functions and understand how to remove and reinstall the flywheel.

The coils, especially those in the 60's motors have a reputation for cracking and allowing moisture in and then starting to break down, creating problems. They changed the plastic formulation on the coils at some stage and the replacement ones are fine. A lot of people will replace the coils without replacing the spark plug leads.

Even if they do, often times the connection from the coil to the spark plug lead is not very good. The faces of the coils also have to be lined up with the machined face perfectly or you're spark will not be perfect.
